Fallout: New Vegas had a relatively short development cycle, being built on the foundations of Fallout 3, but another game in the series from Obsidian would conceivably take longer, since development times in general have grown significantly since the late 2000s. It's impossible to say when a Fallout spin-off could come, if it happens at all, but Bethesda will turn its attention to The Elder Scrolls VI before Fallout 5gets underway. Both games are currently without a release dates, meaning any new project like a potential Fallout would be on the back burner for at least a little while. Avowed has a fantasy setting, while The Outer Worlds 2 is a follow-up to is mega-corporate, sci-fi predecessor, which released in 2019.

The main issue is Obsidian also has a full slate of RPGs in development. It’s a town of dreamers and desperados being torn apart by warring factions vying for complete control of this desert oasis. For many fans, the prospect of New Vegas 2 is more exciting than 5, since Obsidian's entry is generally considered the best of the modern Fallout games. It’s the kind of town where you dig your own grave prior to being shot in the head and left for dead and that’s before things really get ugly. Obsidian previously developed Fallout: New Vegas, which released in 2010 not long after Bethesda's first entry in the series, Fallout 3. The rumors claim Microsoft is considering giving another one of its acquired studios, Obsidian Entertainment, a second opportunity to make a Fallout game.
With the rate at which Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield have come, TES 6's release will still be a few years out at the end of 2022, and Fallout 5 another few after that.Īlthough nothing has been confirmed, rumors have started circulating saying Microsoft will be taking advantage of the Fallout IP to create a spin-off while Bethesda works on Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI.
Bethesda is already making Fallout 5 plans, but if the development cycles for Starfield and TES 6 are any indication, it will be an incredibly long time until it releases. The sixth mainline Elder Scrolls is probably still in very early development, meaning Fallout 5 is even more intangible. It's now been more than a decade since the last Elder Scrolls game, with Skyrim releasing in late 2011 and just recently receiving another rerelease in the form of Skyrim Anniversary Edition. TES 6 was already officially announced at E3 2018, and has had no promotional material aside from that first teaser trailer.
